Bad Doggy by Thu Vu is the story of Harper, a little dog whose fur is white and brown. Everyone knows she is the most beautiful dog in town but Harper has no manners. Every time her owners leave her at home and go out for hours, Harper feels they are abandoning her and she feels sour. Harper does not think she is doing anything wrong and she does not understand why her owners are mad at her. How does Harper change?
The story is about friendship, and Harper’s loneliness is palpable from the story. The illustrations are adorable and I like the way the illustrator, who is the author, gives Harper a personality of her own. It’s a cute bedtime storybook for parents and grandparents to read out to their kids and grandchildren. Tutors and educators can use the story book in classrooms to help children understand what it is to be ill mannered and how annoying they can be if they have no manners. It is a good way to help children understand that, no matter how beautiful they are, it is equally important to have good manners because bad manners can put off the people around them. The story also highlights the importance of having a companion so that children do not misbehave because they are lonely.
